(LOT 173)
Ultra-Scarce 1925 Honus Wagner "Run For Sheriff" Pinback

Honus Wagner's popularity in the "Steel City" needs no introduction for the immortal Pirates shortstop put on a world-class performance for the avid Pittsburgh patrons virtually his entire career! After his retirement, this baseball immortal sought out to utilize his immense stature by running for the Sheriff of Allegheny County in 1925. For the longest of times, pinbacks have been used within the political arena as a campaign promotional tool, substantiating why a small 1" in diameter pin was issued to assist the "Flying Dutchman's" run for office. Considered extremely rare among advanced pinback collectors, the 1925 Honus Wagner campaign pin presented here seldom surfaces for the taking, with very few campaign items known from that obscure election.

We have only come across a handful of these eclectic artifacts that portray a classic "Wagner holding bat" pose and bold white "FOR SHERIIF - J.HONUS WAGNER" text. While Wagner ultimately lost the election, it conjures up memories of one of the most significant moments from his storybook life. Issued by the Kant Novelty Co. of Pittsburgh, PA., their advertisement is affixed to a relatively clean verso. The circumference rim is still tightly fastened, and the "timeless" image places the viewer back to a bygone era when the iconic Wagner ruled our National Pastime. One of his greatest rarities, it suffices asone of Wagner's highly coveted pinbacks and a collectible excruciatingly tough to find!
