1911-14 D304 Butter Krust Ty Cobb PSA 1.5 FR – Ultra Scarce & One of Only Six PSA-Graded Butter Krust Cobb Examples!
BUTTER KRUST COBB!!!... One of Ty Cobb's most cherished and valuable cardboard issues is his ever-elusive 1911-14 D304 bread subject depicting an iconic batting stance of the immortal Tyrus strikingly similar to his iconic Cracker Jack pose. First issued in 1911, this scarce PSA 1.5 D304 Tyrus marvel boasts the seldom-surfacing BUTTER KRUST ad back, one of five possible bread advertisements issued by the Buffalo based General Baking Company to promote their popular bread products. Considered scarcer than the more common Brunners Bread ad back, this outstanding keepsake is one of only six PSA encapsulated Butter Krust Cobb's, with SGC listing only two additional specimens! Tantamount to Cobb's arguable stature as baseball's finest Deadball Era player is this momentous rarity that truly merits the highest hobby accolades.

Going into the 1911 campaign (the year this card was issued), the immortal Cobb had already won four successive AL batting titles and was in the midst of replacing the great Honus Wagner as our National Pastime's supreme player. Cobb continued his unprecedented batting dominance by pacing the Junior Circuit once again in 1911 with an unfathomable .419 batting average, the highest of his exalted 24-year career. That remarkable 1911 campaign would see the majestic Georgia Peach also lead the American League in nearly every other major offensive category including hits (248), runs (148), doubles (47). triples (27), RBIs (127), stolen bases (83), and the critical OPS figure (1.086). Cobb would continue ransacking overmatched pitchers to the tune of nine successive batting titles and 12 in a 13-year span, only bested by Tris Speaker in 1916.

We cannot imagine a more formidable card of the immortal Cobb than one portraying his legendary batting pose that, as previously stated, boasts a close resemblance to his hallowed 1914-15 Cracker Jack and 1922 E121 subjects. You can almost feel Cobb's unequivocal intensity radiating from his classic stance as he prepares to stroke another one of his 4,189 safeties, ultimately leading to a still record .366 batting average. The mustard brown background serves as a stupendous setting for the lithographic Cobb illustration, and atypically, the image reveals near-perfect centering as most D304 Cobbs reflect skewed images. Preventing a higher grade is even corner wear, border toning, reverse side scattered soiling, several scattered wrinkles, an area of vertical enamel peel along the upper right border, and most notably, a more severe vertical crease revealing paper loss that is situated along the interior right frame directly to the right of Cobb's timeless illustration.

Fortunately, the significant central image has not been compromised by any of these flaws, and the lower border caption reading: "TY COBB, DETROIT, AMER." Is completely intact. The final exclamation point is the verso's rather eclectic Butter Krust bold green advertisement, with the vivid captions reading as follows: "EAT BUTTER KRUST BREAD – FRESH EVERY MORNING – FLEISCHMANN BAKERY – GENERAL BAKING COMPANY – THERE ARE 25 SUBJECTS IN THIS SET – ONE WRAPPED IN EACH LOAF OF BUTTER KRUST BREAD – GBC – 102." Most recently, a PSA 4 Cobb General Baking subject fetched $53K, substantiating the notion of the super desirability of the Ty Cobb D304 bread issue. A truly renowned Georgia Peach marvel, it was issued during an era when the incomparable Tyrus Raymond Cobb was embarking on one of the most extraordinary careers in baseball history, electrifying his fan base over a 24-year period via his unparalleled batting, fielding and base-running prowess!
