(LOT 14)
1910 D380 Clement Brothers Ty Cobb Type 2 SGC Authentic - One of Only Three Encapsulated Examples on the Combined SGC & PSA Census Reports!

ULTRA-RARE TYRUS!!!... Presented here is one of the rarest Ty Cobb cards extant, a near-impossible-to-find 1910 Clement Brothers SGC Authentic Type 2 scarcity that joins only two other SGC examples as the only professionally graded examples (PSA had no graded Cobbs at the time this was written). These ultra-obscure bakery cards were first issued in 1909 by the Rochester, NY bakery and included eight minor league players from the Rochester Bronchos, most likely issued to commemorate this popular local team winning their respective Eastern League title. The 1909 D380-1 minor league subjects are dubbed Type 1, and Clement Brothers followed up this small eight-card set by issuing 24 MLB players in their larger 1910 issue, with these D380 cards classified as Type 2 subjects. Customers would receive one card per loaf of bread, and tantamount to most early 20th century baseball card compilations, the set's most exalted and valuable player is the immortal Tyrus Raymond Cobb.

Most significantly, aside from the unquestionable rarity factor, is the iconic Ty Cobb batting pose first utilized on his legendary 1909 E90-1 American Caramel subject, with other HOF players from this sparse D380 set (e.g., Joss, Collins, Bender, etc.) likewise portraying their E90-1 images. The 1910 campaign would see the majestic Cobb capture his fourth consecutive AL batting title via his spectacular .382 mark, on his way to an unprecedented nine successive batting crowns and 12 in 13 seasons. His well-centered legendary batting stance steals the show, as he prepares to smack another one of his 4,189 safeties. Although an irregular upper edge manual trim rightfully accounts for the Authentic assessment, the fine aesthetics are consistent with most VG examples.

Even corner wear, some light stray wrinkles, including a horizontal surface crease (barely visible to the naked eye), scattered background snow, stray toning, and general surface wear are negligible faults not compromising the hallowed central image. The final superlative is the extremely rare Clement Brothers ad back that states you can receive a card in one wrapped loaf of bread, as well as noting that this bakery offers 22 kinds of pies. A momentous Ty Cobb issue, it stands tall as one of the Georgia Peach's most obscure cards on the planet, with this exact same offering fetching $26K in an April 2020 auction. With only a handful of known subjects, this may be your final opportunity to capture the ever-elusive 1910 D380 Cobb!
