(LOT 326)
1911-14 D304 Brunners Honus Wagner PSA 3 VG

THE FLYING DUTCHMAN!!! The meteoric pricing rise of Honus Wagner's vintage cards is tantamount to an uncontrollable brush fire, with this staggering surge showing little signs of slowing down. Most likely prompted by his "Holy Grail" T206 subject as well as other Wagner portrait issues likewise boasting Carl Horner's T206 image, this infectious inflation has spread to all of Han's pre-WWI cards. That said, presented here is one of the Flying Dutchman's most elusive early 1910s subjects, a splendid PSA 3 VG 1911-14 Brunners offering that, along with a meager two other examples, has only been bested by five PSA specimens. Along with his exalted T206 masterpiece, Wagner's esteemed stature is certainly fueled by his proud standing as baseball's greatest all-time shortstop.

A 1936 charter member of baseball's illustrious HOF, Honus accumulated 3,418 lifetime hits to the tune of a sensational .328 batting average while capturing an NL record eight batting titles (tied with the great Tony Gwynn). The card itself depicts a crystal-clear batting image of the incomparable Wagner as he finishes his majestic swing. An eye-pleasing baby blue background exhibiting some light snow encompasses the timeless illustration, and preventing a higher assessment is standard corner wear as well as a rather light horizontal crease running across the card at the plane of Wagner's knees. Atypical near-perfect centering and a relatively clean Brunners ad back are the final superlatives for this seldom-surfacing heirloom that conjures up captivating memories of how the immortal Wagner ruled the shortstop position better than any of his inferior peers!
