(LOT 181)
1909 E102 Ty Cobb SGC 4 VG-EX - POP 2; Highest Graded Example!

ICONIC GEORGIA PEACH!!! The seldom-surfacing E102 Anonymous Ty Cobb is still considered by many card purists as Cobb's conventional-sized rookie card, with its original distribution year arguably 1908. While several Cobb postcards and his W600 Sporting Life Cabinet were issued in 1907, a number of collecting purists forgo the notion that larger-sized cardboard artifacts suffice as a "true" rookie card issue, choosing only conventional-sized and/or mainstream cards for their distinguished compilations. Presented here is an SGC 4 example of this esteemed Cobb subject, with SGC's census report only listing five other examples at this mid-grade tier and a meager six higher examples. The incomparable Georgia Peach's .366 batting average still stands as baseball's all-time mark via his 4,189 safeties. A 1936 HOF charter member, Cobb claimed an unprecedented 12 batting championships in 13 seasons, including a staggering nine consecutive titles from 1907-15! The uncanny batsman is depicted in a classic leaning-on-bat pose that is ultra-popular with collectors, with this iconic image also affixed to Cobb's E92, E101, E106, T214, T216 & D303 issues. His stoic pose portrays vibrant gray hues and spectacular clarity, set against a sparkling array of yellow and orange background tints. While the top-to-bottom centering is atypically near-perfect, the side-to-side positioning favors the right edge. No major creases are evident, and accounting for the grade is corner wear (including some enamel peel at the upper two corners), as well as some faint border wrinkles. One of the Georgia Peach's most sought-after cards, this obscure mid-grade example would immediately boost any esteemed Tyrus collection!
