1933-34 R309 Goudey Premiums Babe Ruth PSA 5.5 EX+ - Pop 1; Only One PSA Example Graded Higher!

RARE FOR THE GRADE RUTH!!! The Goudey Gum Company released its landmark 240-subject set in 1933, also initiating a redemption process whereby a number of Goudey wrappers could be mailed to the Boston, MA office in return for an oversized thick cardboard stock Goudey Premium. Of the four possible premiums, three were issued in 1933, including AL and NL All-Star team photos and a single portrayal of the immortal Babe Ruth. In 1934, an additional subject was offered: a team photo of the World Champion 1933 New York Giants. Extremely condition-sensitive and measuring 5-1/2" x 8-13/16", each card features an imposing image framed by an ornate gold border. The flipside included a pull-out stand to display these keepsakes, with many of the existing specimens now excluding the torn-off stand. The captivating Babe Ruth Premium is offered here in a miraculous PSA 5.5 holder, retaining its original easel.

The sole example at this near-impossible plateau, it has only been bested by a single PSA 7 specimen! The Ruth image is an enlarged version of his #144 Goudey subject, with the classic illustration sufficing as the iconic Charles Conlon 1927 photograph, arguably residing as the Babe's most iconic image. Presenting itself in near-mint fashion, Ruth's breathtaking Goudey batting pose is joined by relatively square corners, atypically strong gold-hued borders and impeccable clarity. No notable surface flaws are evident, with the card most likely downgraded due to some diminutive soiling spots on the verso's easel. A magnificent portrayal of the Sultan of Swat, this extremely rare lofty assessment merits it a final resting place in one of the foremost Ruth gatherings!
