(LOT 38)
1953 Topps #220 Satchel Paige PSA 8 NM-MT

SATCHEL!!! Long after most ballplayers, and especially pitchers, enjoy the prime of their career, Satchel Paige was just getting started in the Majors with the Cleveland Indians, signing with the club as a spry 41-year-old. Most 41-year-olds are honing their golf or bowling skills, not facing power hitters like Mantle, Williams or Berra every fourth day. But given his lengthy 40+ years in professional baseball, it is a little more difficult to pinpoint when Ol' Satch's prime was. By his numbers, he won more than 2,000 of 2,500 games pitched, threw 250 shutouts and 50 no-hitters. Astonishing, but not impossible, given he pitched at every level of professional baseball from 1926 to 1966. Truly remarkable! Offered here is an outstanding PSA 8 subject, Paige's portrait emanates a sparkling array of facial hues, with the classic pose modestly favoring the left edge. Strong right-angled corners, clean borders, pack-fresh surfaces and spectacular crystal-clear clarity all combine to validate the highly coveted assessment. One of the most popular Hall of Fame issues from the 1950s, it represents a pitcher who many historians arguably claim to be the greatest of them all, with this final Satchel Paige issue proudly standing as one of the hobby's most desirable post-WWII Cooperstown inductees!
