(LOT 168)
1937 Joe DiMaggio PSA Type 1 Encapsulated ACME NEWSPICTURES Photo – "Joltin Joe" in the Yankee Dugout Before the 1937 World Series - Measures Approx. 6" x 8-1/4" - PSA Type I LOA

Fresh off the heels of his sensational rookie campaign in which he batted .323, clouted 29 dingers and knocked in 125 runs while leading the Yankees to a World Championship, Joe DiMaggio was just getting warmed up. The following 1937 season, the Yankee Clipper would augment his statistics to the tune of a .346 average, 46 dingers, 167 R.B.I.'s and a sensational 1.085 OPS! This 22-year old phenom was certainly no "fluke" and along with Lou Gehrig, led the Yankees to their second consecutive World Series title in 1937. This spectacular 1937 PSA Type 1 offering portrays "Joltin Joe" posing at the end of the Yankee Stadium dugout during the final series of the season against the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees would close out the campaign by taking two of the three games at the "House that Ruth Built" to end the season with an A.L. pennant winning 102-52 record. The 1937 Fall Classic would start on October 6th, likewise at Yankee Stadium, and see a rematch of the 1936 Series, with the mighty New York Yankees once again matching up against their cross-river rival New York Giants.

The Yankees would continue their dominance over their fellow "Big Apple" opponents by besting the Giants in a short five-game series. Issued on October 2, 1937, this brilliant image depicts the "Yankee Clipper" in his classic Yankee pinstripes as DiMaggio showcases his period-style sunglasses directly beneath his Yankees cap. Sparkling clarity, near-perfect contrast and centering as well as a relatively clean surface are the highlights of this time defying marvel that has remained nearly unscathed over the past 83 years. The verso includes the significant ACME NEWSPICTURES credit stamp as well as a neat caption that provides an eloquent account of how DiMaggio and the Yankees are about to "face-off' against the N.Y. Giants. An extremely rare illustration of the great "Joltin Joe", it transcends time to an era when this iconic Yankee was embarking on a career that would place him as one of baseball's all-time centerfielders!
