(LOT 106)
c.1930's Lou Gehrig Classic Batting Stance – PSA Type I Encapsulated Wide World Photos – Measures Approx. 8" x 10"

This magnificent Lou Gehrig c.1930's photo portrays the "Iron Horse" in his classic batting stance as he prepares to wallop another baseball into the furthest confines of an opposing team's stadium. Donning his celebrated New York road uniform and obviously taken during a pre-game batting practice session, this spectacular 8" x 10" illustration reflects near-perfect photography with regard to Gehrig's mighty pose. Brilliant central image aesthetics include crystal-clear clarity, near-perfect contrast and no obtrusive flaws negatively impacting Gehrig's imposing stance that intimidated opposing pitchers for some 14 years. Some border notations, modest soiling, a few upper right border surface abrasions and a lower right corner chip are the noted blemishes that surely do not impede on the superb eye appeal of Gehrig's majestic batting image.

The flipside reveals the renowned "WIDE WORLD PHOTOS" credit stamp as well as some additional photo service stamps most likely attributed to those services utilizing this image after its original release by Wide World Photos. While Gehrig's extensive list of batting accomplishments stands at a world-class level, his iconic legacy is still linked to his unfathomable 2,130 consecutive game streak that came to an abrupt end in 1939 via the incurable ALS disease that claimed his life in 1941. It was that illness that eventually led to his incomparable "Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth" speech on July 4, 1939 that still resides as baseball's "Gettysburg Address". Simply stated, Gehrig's immortal stature will "echo for eternity", substantiating why any of his period issued keepsakes such as this exalted batting photo are among the most revered collectibles in our illustrious hobby!
