PSA 10 Derek Jeter SP Rookie Card Joins Vintage Greats in Memory Lane Summer Auction

One of the highest quality examples of an iconic modern era card, a rare Ty Cobb card promoting his own tobacco product and thousands of vintage singles, lots and sets are among more than 2,200 lots in the upcoming Memory Lane Summer Rarities Auction.

The 388-page catalog opens with a PSA 10 1993 Upper Deck SP Derek Jeter, the premier rookie card of the New York Yankees icon.  With its chromium face, it’s prone to wear with only 22 of the more than 26,000 copies graded by PSA having been awarded the Gem Mint 10 grade.

The opening bid is $50,000.

Over 80 years earlier, another Hall of Famer was lending his name to a brand of tobacco.  The “Ty Cobb Tobacco” back is what makes a T206 card of the Georgia Peach so rare, with only 21 ever graded by PSA – most entering the population report after a 2010s find in the Southeast. Memory Lane is offering a PSA 1.5 example that also opens at $50,000.

Another Cobb rarity — the 1914 Cracker Jack — is featured as well, with a PSA 5 example that stands among the best known.

Somewhere in the chronological middle of those three listings is Joe Namath’s 1965 Topps “tall boy” rookie card. Memory Lane is offering a rare, high-grade (PSA 8.5) copy. Only five PSA rated Namath rookies rank higher.

Among the other pre-War listings is the number one ranked 1888 N29 Allen & Ginter set on PSA’s Set Registry, a W600 Honus Wagner (Type 4 with the T206 Carl Horner photo), a collection of 1911 T3 Turkey Red cards, runs of graded T205 and T206 cards and a PSA 8 1933 Goudey Sport Kings Babe Ruth.

The auction will also feature several breaks of complete and partial high-grade sets, including 1953 Topps with PSA 8 Mickey Mantle and Jackie Robinson cards and hundreds of carefully curated high level 1969 Topps cards from the collection of the late Dr. Mark Haverkos. Other breaks feature high quality 1948 and 1953 Bowman football cards.

Collectors will see dozens of 1950s and ‘60s graded hockey issues and unopened material including a 2000 Playoff Contenders football box (Tom Brady rookie cards possible) and 1976 Topps cello football box.

Ornate and rarely seen decal mini bats from the early 1900s featuring Cobb, Joe Jackson, Tris Speaker and Frank Chance headline the memorabilia available in the sale, along with autographed Babe Ruth baseballs and another highly graded ball signed by Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris.

Game jerseys from Baseball Hall of Famers Early Wynn and Robin Roberts join a variety of vintage ticket stubs and other items from the past and present that are also part of the catalog.

Bidding is set to open August 22 and will close September 13 at MemoryLaneInc.com.
