Near Set Specifics
The overall Grade Point Average of the 404 cards in this collection is a strong 4.33. Fully 37% of the set is graded at PSA 5 (138 cards) or PSA 6 (13). Another amazing attribute to this collection is that; two cards, both rare variations, are graded below PSA 4. The Demmitt St. Louis is a PSA 3 that exhibits no creases of note; its grade attributable mainly to corner wear. The Elberfeld Washington portrait is graded PSA 1 by virtue of pinholes at top and bottom, but presents at a much higher level with no creases. While on the subject of grading it is also noteworthy that this collection includes the complete 48-card subset of scarce Southern Leaguers, all minimally at the PSA 4 level with nine PSA 5s and a pair of PSA 6s. A final element that the potential bidder should consider, whether planning to use this Lot as the basis for building toward completion of the set or speculating on its potential break-up value, is the strong showing of the more difficult backs to be found, especially among the Hall of Famers.
Despite T206 having been the most studied and publicized baseball card set in hobby history, much important work is still being done in the analysis of relative rarity among the advertising backs that appear. It is only within the past two years that new research has been published providing a better picture of the specific front/back combinations that have been confirmed or suspected to exist. Even with this new information, anomalies and unanswered questions leave the topic ripe for further study. The result of this new scholarship has been an increase in the number of collectors attempting to assemble sets of those T206s that share a specific ad back, such as the dramatic dark blue Polar Bears or the exotic Tolstois or El Principe de Gales. These pioneering specialists are discovering that some cards, even those with "common" fronts, are significant rarities with one or the other of the ad backs. This is more and more frequently causing eye-popping bidding wars when one of these under-the-radar ad-back rarities comes to market. T206 has proven its status as the most enduring and most endearing of the Hobby's classic card sets. It has outlived its original intended audience, most of the original collectors' children and many of their children's children, remaining an object of great devotion well into a fourth generation.
