(Lot 2) - 1909-11 T-206 Near complete set - 404 cards
The HOBBY's great T206 Set! The most complex and challenging of all Sets to collect...
The opportunity presented by this Set and its importance to a Serious Collector
The present offering provides a leg-up to the collector who seeks to be the "Lucky 13th" person to join that exclusive club. Moreover, the stringent grading standards under which this lot was painstakingly assembled which allows its next owner to reasonably aspire to an even more prominent spot in the hierarchy of complete-set T206 owners by virtue of this Set's overall high quality makeup.
To get down to the brass tacks (or plastic slabs) of this amazing assemblage, the Lot at hand comprises 404 cards, an astounding 77% of a 524-card "Complete" (capital C) set. Excluding the Big 4, this partial set is missing only 116 cards, of which 5 are HOF's and 111 are regarded as "commons" (or nearly so). An outstanding accomplishment in its own right, this grouping includes 95% of the 74 collectible T206 Hall of Famers (no Wagner, Plank). Those not included here are the Christy Mathewson portrait, John McGraw portrait/no cap, Cy Young bare hand, and Cy Young portrait. As is true with the rest of this collection, the Hall of Famers are notable not only for their completeness, but also for their high quality. Not a single card among the Hall of Famers resides in a PSA holder that is less than a VG-EX 4, and fully 26% of them have been graded either PSA 5 or 6.
Further, it is icing on the cake to report that among the higher-graded HOF'ers in this Set are the Ty Cobb red background (PSA 5), Ty Cobb bat off shoulder (PSA 6), Walter Johnson hands at chest and Walter Johnson portrait (both PSA 5) and Christy Mathewson white cap (PSA 5). Among the rare variations in T206 (besides Magie and Doyle), the only notable absence is O'Hara St. Louis. Of the remaining 111 cards needed to complete this fabulous set, exactly 100 are "commons" as defined by their current price level in the new edition Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards. Each of the 11 uncommon cards missing from this collection is valued just one step above common.
