(LOT 627)
1923 World Series Game #1 at Yankee Stadium - "A Sliding Babe Ruth is Called Out at Home Plate"! - Original Type I Underwood & Underwood Photo - Measures Approx. 6" x 7-1/2" - PSA Type I LOA

Virtually all baseball purists are well aware that 1923 marked the celebrated opening of Yankee Stadium, the "house that Ruth Built"! Led by the "Sultan of Swat's" 41 round trippers, 131 runs batted in and sensational .393 batting average, the Yankees would win 98 games and "coast" to their 3rd straight A.L. pennant. Likewise, for the third consecutive season they would be matched against their cross-town rivals, John McGraw's Giants who had bested them in the previous two Fall Classics.

On October 10, 1923, the World Series would open up at Yankee Stadium, with the Giants besting the Yanks by a tightly contested 5-4 margin. This ultra-rare black & white 6" x 7-1/2" Underwood & Underwood Type I photo depicts the iconic Ruth sliding across home plate and being called "out" by the home plate umpire. The well-preserved image shows minimal wear with the captivating illustration portraying exceptional contrast and clarity as you can almost feel Ruth's despair via his failed scoring attempt. That play would ultimately loom large since the Yankees would fall one run short.

Fortunately for the Yankees, they would best the Giants in 4 of the next 5 games to capture their first World Series title; an unparalleled run that would produce 27 championships! The verso includes the critical Underwood & Underwood News stamp for ironclad Type I authenticity as well as several captions detailing Ruth's infamous slide. A "spine-tingling" artifact, it captures one of the "Bambino's" eclectic moments in time during his magnificent 1923 A.L. MVP championship season. - PSA Type I LOA
