(LOT 6)
c. 1915-1920 Christy Mathewson American Chicle Company "Fadeaway" Ball Gum Display Box Includes Original Gum Balls

As only a teenager, Christy Mathewson learned his signature "fadeaway" pitch while pitching in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. He took that fadeaway, now referred to as a screwball, to the New York Giants and dominated National League hitters for the better part of 17 seasons, posting a 373-188 record with a 2.13 ERA and 2,507 strikeouts. Offered here is a Mathewson endorsed and incredibly rare c. 1915-1920 American Chicle Company "Fadeaway" Ball Gum display box filled with hundreds of the original "game play" gum balls. Each white gumball features dark stitch lines to simulate a baseball with a specific play across the sweet spot like Walk, Home Run, Triple, Double Play and more. The box displays surface abrasions, water spots and some moderate tearing and separation, but for a century-old game of Fadeaway Chicle Ball Game, this is in remarkable shape. The inner, under-lid graphics are phenomenal and as colorful as the day it was originally opened. The gumballs have deteriorated over the last 100 years, but way back when you could get two for 1-cent, so this has to be worth at least $0.50 cents worth of gum, but it would not be advisable to chew. Christy Mathewson earned Hall of Fame status and this superbly preserved Fadaway Ball Gum chewing gum game surely would be enshrined in the HOF of candy or historic pieces. Signal for this Fadaway!
