(LOT 3)
Lou Gehrig Knot Hole League of America Framed

As part of the Goudey Gum Company's preparations to issue the 1934 Goudey Baseball set, they created the Knot Hole League of America of which Henry Louis Gehrig was Honorary President. The League was introduced in order to "increase interest in baseball" and offer benefits to members like advice from Lou Gehrig and possibly a photo with the Iron Horse. By sending in twenty Big League Wrappers and $0.03 cents, fans could become members. Presented here is a 1934 Lou Gehrig Knot Hole League of America advertising window display. This incredible piece is vibrant and bold with a rich orange and black background and the tagline "Lou Gehrig says..." as the 1934 Goudey Baseball issues have bannered in blue across the bottom of each. Measuring approx. 21-1/4" x 10-1/4", this stupendously rare piece still presents the original glue strip residue used to attach the ad to a store window. Considering that there remains evidence of glue residue, it is more than likely that this display was never used and the unfaded orange color also attests to the theory. Three vertical fold lines are visible as issued from mailing, with some negligible and unobtrusive light foxing and discoloration noticeable at the right fold, bottom edge. A tiny crease can be seen next to the bottom right fold, though it is primarily visible from the back. Considering that this was likely saved from prominent window display, it remains in sensational shape having withstood nearly 100 years of storage. As far as we know, this is the ONLY known existing example, and most certainly in this phenomenal condition. This was last sold at auction 25 years ago for $49,233 and held in a private collection since that time. The rarity of the window advertisement cannot be overstated since this has not hit the auction block in 25 years. An alarmingly gorgeous advertising display hosting one of baseball's greatest players and promoting one of the most coveted sets in the hobby! This is the Iron Horse of advertising displays!
