1907-09 Dietsche Postcard Ty Cobb - Batting Detroit Tigers Postcards SGC 4.5 VG-EX+
COBB ROOKIE IMAGE!!! Ty Cobb's inaugural solo appearance on an MLB baseball card is 1907, a year when various postcards were distributed with his image in varying poses. Making his big league debut with the Detroit Tigers in 1905, Ty Cobb played only 41 games, hitting a satisfactory .238 in 165 plate appearances. In his second season, Cobb vaulted forward to bat an impressive .316, the first of 23 consecutive years of exceeding the above-average .300 benchmark. Throughout his career, he led the American League a record 12 times in batting average, including an untouchable nine consecutive seasons from 1907 through 1915. In 1907, he slapped 212 hits, posting a .350 batting average, to win the first of his 12 batting titles.
Manufacturers clamored to use the Georgia Peach's image on various postcards and advertisements throughout the 1907 season. The Dietsche postcards were distributed from 1907 to 1909 by the A.C. Dietsche Company of Detroit, Michigan, with the set's key subjects being the two iconic Georgia Peach batting and fielding subjects (the back's "Copyright 1908" text indicates the year). This eye-pleasing SGC 4.5 VG-EX+ offering displays a Cobb batting image with outstanding clarity and contrast. Imperfections, though minimal, include even corner & edge wear and typical and expected fading and surface touches, though nothing detracts from the incredible central image of the game's greatest batter. The final exclamation point is an unmarked reverse offering only light scattered soiling/toning and a minor water mark at the lower left corner, with this rare Georgia Peach rookie-era issue portraying fine overall pack-fresh aesthetics!
**Originally listed in the catalog as a "rookie" issue, this is in fact a rookie image, also used from the 1907 Dietsche postcard, though this copyright is 1908.
