(LOT 478)
1952 Topps #392 Hoyt Wilhelm Rookie PSA 7 NM

OLD FOLKS KNUCKLER!!!... In 1952, the 29-year-old rookie Hoyt Wilhelm led the National League with a 2.43 ERA, the first and only time a reliever ever has. Hoyt posted a 15-3 record and 108 strikeouts in 159 innings over 71 games to finish fourth in NL MVP voting. The unique trait that few pitchers showcased was his knuckleball, that he had begun throwing since high school, which was considered an old man's pitch to prolong his career. But Wilhelm mastered the rare toss, aiming at the center of the strike zone, knowing full well that the pitch would end up somewhere else that even he did not know.

Hoyt Wilhelm wrapped up a Hall of Fame career with a 143-122 record with 1,610 Ks and a 2.52 ERA over 21 seasons. Old Sarge also posted 228 saves for nine teams in both leagues. Offered here is a 1952 Topps #392 issue graded 7 NM by PSA. Excellent centering, brilliant color and clean surfaces highlight this sharp issue. This man broke the mold of the typical knuckleballer to earn a spot in Cooperstown.
