(LOT 37)
1934 Goudey #23 Charley Gehringer PSA 9 MINT

PREMIER GEHRINGER!!!... One of the classic 1934 Goudey Gum set's highly coveted subjects is Motor City's Hall of Famer Charley Gehringer, presented here in a miraculous PSA 9 MINT holder. PSA's prestigious Pop Chart lists only five meager examples at this exalted plateau, with not a SINGLE copy graded higher! Charlie Gehringer resides as one of our National Pastime's greatest all-time second basemen, accumulating outstanding statistics such as a .320 lifetime batting average and seven different seasons in which he stroked over 200 hits and knocked in over 100 runs. His .371 batting average in 1937 earned him the Junior Circuit's MVP Award, and he led the Detroit Tigers to three pennants and a 1935 world championship. His scintillating appearance on what may be his most sought-after cardboard collectible likewise boasts championship caliber.

The Cooperstown inductee's stoic image is pristine, depicting a breathtaking array of gray, white and facial hues that are set against a flawless red-orange background. The imposing illustration is extremely well-centered between four clean borders, only reflecting a slight partiality towards the upper edge. The verso's bold green typography is affixed to a super clean surface, with both sides eluding any glaring imperfections. It seems literally impossible that a 90-year-old card could retain nearly all of its original pack-fresh attributes. Yet, courtesy of our esteemed consignor as well as any of its previous owners, this world-class gem proudly boasts the near-impossible PSA 9 pinnacle assessment, joining a paltry four other specimens as the finest of its kind!
