(LOT 16)
1911-1916 T216 People's Tobacco Co./Kotton Cigarettes Ty Cobb Batting Detroit Americans - Type 2 Ad Back (Never Go Out – Not in a Trust) PSA 1 PR

RARE TYRUS!!!... This ultra-scarce PSA 1 T216 Kotton Cigarettes Ty Cobb Batting Type 2 (Never Go Out – Not in a Trust) keepsake is one of only six PSA encapsulated copies! The T216 lineage can be traced back to the People's Tobacco Co. which issued these cards from 1911 through 1916 in New Orleans. Three different cigarette brands were distributed, including Kotton, Mino and Virginia Extra, with Kotton subjects revealing three different ad-back variations including: Type 1 (1-2-3; cardboard stock; glossy finish); Type 2 (Never Go Out – Not in a Trust; cardboard stock; glossy finish); and Type 3 (Never Go Out; thin paper stock; matte finish). Extremely rare and condition-sensitive, these tobacco cards closely resemble the E106 and D303 sets issued during that same period, with the 104-subject checklist including several player variations.

Two different Cobb subjects were issued for all three cigarette ads (batting and standing), with this T216 rarity boasting the iconic Cobb batting pose first utilized on his E90-1 issue. While the assessment is due to a number of vivid creases on its Type 2 glossy surface and corner layering, the critical legendary batting image still retains vibrant hues and an overall fine appearance. The lower border depicts the caption "Cobb, c.f. Detroit Americans", and the significant ad back portrays the scarce "KOTTON CIGARETTES - NEVER GO OUT – NOT IN A TRUST - PEOPLES TOBACCO CO." verbiage. One of the Georgia Peach's most elusive cards, it was issued when this fiery immortal was in the midst of his unprecedented nine consecutive AL batting titles!
