(LOT 1940)
Press Pin from Cal Ripken Jr.'s Record-Breaking 2,131st Consecutive Game – Includes Consignor's Letter of Provenance

2,131 STRAIGHT GAMES!!! On September 6, 1995, Cal Ripen Jr. would play in his 2,131st consecutive MLB game at Camden Yards against the California Angels, with 46,272 captivated fans looking on, miraculously passing Lou Gehrig's seemingly unbreakable record of 2,130 straight games. The Orioles public relations director gifted this super scarce pewter press pin to approximately two dozen members of the press in attendance that historic night, including our esteemed consignor who was covering the game for Time magazine. The pin includes Ripken's classic "#8" in the center, "2,130" and "2,131" engravings on opposite sides, as well as the original box. Our website includes images of our consignor's magazine article, his Time press pass, his Time business card, and a letter of provenance printed on Time stationary. With only a few dozen known examples, this pin truly stands as a momentous heirloom from the game that the Iron Horse's iconic mark was eclipsed by the legendary HOF shortstop!
