Ruffing dropped out of school as a kid to work in a coal mine in Illinois. He played outfield and first base for the company's team. Losing four of his toes on his left foot, he moved from outfield to become a pitcher and eventually made his way to the Major Leagues, playing for the Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox and the most successful part of his career with the New York Yankees. He was a 6X All-Star, 6X World Series champ, AL win leader and strike out leader and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. The OAL MacPhail stamp is light but very visible.
