(LOT 18)
1910 Williams Caramel E103 Christy Mathewson (Nagy Collection) SGC 2 GOOD

BIG SIX RARITY!!! The extremely obscure 1910 Williams Caramel Candy cards, including 30 different baseball subjects, were printed on super-fragile paper stock, and due to their ultra-condition sensitivity, virtually no mid-grade examples are available. This SGC 2 Christy E103 scarcity stands as one of the most coveted of all Matty cardboard issues. One of only five SGC 2 examples, it has been bested by a meager four specimens! The Christian Gentleman recorded an astounding 373 lifetime victories, with his greatest achievement arguably being his unprecedented three shutouts in the 1905 Fall Classic against Connie Mack's mighty Athletics.

His representation on this E103 rarity is absolutely splendid, with the classic portrait image originally issued in the early 1900s by renowned photographer Benjamin Falk stealing the show. An imposing crimson red setting and atypically near-perfect centering are added superlatives, with the assessment due to a slightly miscut lower edge (somewhat compromising the Williams Carmel Co. text) and even corner wear. Most significantly, it is this same iconic image appearing on Matty's exalted Sporting Life W600 Cabinets and M116 issues, proudly standing as one of his most elusive turn of the century candy cards!
