(LOT 1281)
1976 Topps #148 Walter Payton PSA 9 MINT

SWEET BEAR!!! During the 1980s, the NFL featured some of the greatest running backs in league history including Earl Campbell, Marcus Allen, Tony Dorsett, Eric Dickerson and, of course, Walter Payton. Sweetness played 13 seasons for the Chicago Bears, won the 1985 Super Bowl and retired with multiple since-broken records including most career rushing yards, touchdowns, carries and all-purpose yards, among others. As a rookie in 1975, Payton scored seven rushing touchdowns and posted 892 yards from scrimmage at only 21 years old. Offered here is a 1976 Topps #148 Walter Payton Rookie graded 9 MINT by PSA. Displaying all of the attributes expected from a 9 MINT example, this issue has pinpoint corners, razor-sharp edges, crystal clear imagery and superb registration. We can only assume that the centering from left to right (favoring the right edge) attests to this not earning the coveted GEM MINT 10 assessment. This PSA 9 holdered gem is remarkably well preserved and worthy of Walter Payton's legacy as one of the best ever. Payton was named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993 and the NFL renamed the NFL Man of the Year Award, the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award to honor one "player's commitment to philanthropy and community impact, as well as excellence on the field".
