1942 Babe Ruth Batting in War Bond Game - PSA Type I Encapsulated William C. Greene Photo – Measures Approx. 8" x 10"
RUTH WAR BOND GAME!!! This outstanding Babe Ruth Type 1 batting image portrays the iconic Bambino taking one of his monstrous swings in the legendary August 23, 1942 War Bond doubleheader played at Yankee Stadium. It was that legendary day that a 47-year-old Babe Ruth would face 17 pitches against the 54-year-old Walter Johnson before 69,136 fans, who would buy war bonds to raise money for America's war effort. The Big Train would throw 17 pitches to the Sultan of Swat before the Yankees faced off against the Washington Senators. On the fifth Johnson pitch, Ruth hit a monstrous home run into the right-field stands for his unofficial 715th and final career round-tripper, much to the approval of the absolutely delirious packed house. In typical Ruth fashion, he would blast Johnson's 17th and final pitch far into the right-field upper deck, with the ball landing just foul. The Babe would trot around the bases, doffing his cap to the thunderous crowd who ultimately raised $80,000 for the Army-Navy relief fund. Measuring 8" x 10", the classic image portrays Ruth completing one of his 17 swings, with Benny Bengough catching and Bill Klem serving as the home plate umpire. The central illustration has eluded any unsightly blemishes, with the only notable flaws being an upper left corner chip and a diminutive surface scuff to the right of Ruth's Yankees cap. The verso includes the critical "WM. C. GREENE" credit stamp as well as a pencil notation stating Ruth is at bat, the final thumbs up for one of the Bambino's most historically significant Type 1 photos!
