1939 New York Yankees World Championship PSA Type 1 Encapsulated Associated Press Photo with Lou Gehrig in His Final Season! - Photo Measures Approx. 7" x 9"
FINAL GEHRIG SEASON!!! The 1939 season would see the Yankees win their fourth consecutive World Championship as they posted 106 wins and swept the Cincinnati Reds in the Fall Classic. This spectacular PSA Type 1 1939 team photo measures 7" x 9" and was taken during the Yankees '39 Championship campaign. The image includes a total of 27 players donning their Yankee-road flannels, manager Joe McCarthy, trainer, and bat boy. Of course, the two most significant legends are Gehrig (middle row – 4th from left) and DiMaggio (top row – 3rd from left). Additional Hall of Famers on this remarkable squad included Bill Dickey, Joe Gordon, Red Ruffing, Lefty Gomez and manager Joe McCarthy. Other than a few stray wrinkles and standard corner wear, no notable flaws are apparent, with the 84-year-old image revealing fine clarity and virtually perfect contrast. As an anti-climax, the Yankees 1939 championship would take a backseat to the earth-shattering story of immortal first sacker, Lou Gehrig's ALS diagnosis, which would claim his life only two years later. On July 4, 1939, Gehrig would deliver his iconic "Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth" speech before a packed house at Yankee Stadium, in arguably the most enduring and traumatic event in the annals of sports. This well-preserved Type 1 keepsake turns back the clock to a momentous era representing the Iron Horse's final appearance on a Yankees team photo!
