(LOT 93)
1909-11 Cy Young Portrait (Ghost)/Mullaney Multi-Tobacco Brand Overstrike Reverse SGC Authentic

UNIQUE T206 OVERSTRIKE WITH CY "GHOST"!!! T206 mania continues to sweep across the hobby, with esteemed tobacco collectors painstakingly seeking the rarest T206 subjects. One of the foremost T206 collecting angles is assembling factory-issued anomalies such as "scrapper sheet" cards that were not originally machine cut within the factory and placed in cigarette packs. Such is the case for this miraculous SGC Authentic T206 Mullaney/Cy Young Portrait "Ghost" offering, which includes an extraordinary SEVEN different overstrikes on the card's reverse. A one of a kind marvel, it truly stands as the most significant T206 Overstrike example on the planet! While there are other known T206 overstrikes, rare Brown Old Mill/Lenox ad-backs, as well as some Missing Ink T206s, no overstrike anomaly can possibly compare to this Cy Young "Ghost" offering. Its origin is most likely attributed to an inadvertent stage in the printing process whereby multiple strikes to the card's flip side resulted in a tobacco scrapper sheet reflecting an erroneous array of T206 subjects, with these flawed sheets pulled from production before the card-cutting stage.

Similar to Brown Old Mill, the handful of T206 overstrikes we have seen also reflect Authentic grades since they were manually cut from scrapper sheets salvaged from the factory's refuse by intrigued employees. Incredible as it may seem, and courtesy of a sophisticated, and anonymous, T206 enthusiast, we have included images of all seven overstrikes, one of which is the iconic T206 Cy Young Portrait "Ghost" image originally struck by renowned photographer Carl Horner. As you can see, the four T206 cigarette ad overstrikes include: Piedmont Cigarettes, El Principe De Gales (one right side up; one upside down), and Old Mill Cigarettes. The final two printing defects are a yellow and white Cy Young silhouette as well as a rogue mix of yellow and white patterns. SGC has rightfully flipped the card in their holder, portraying the overstrike verso via the holder's front side, with the card's obverse Mullaney image facing the back of the holder. The undisputed king of any known T206 overstrike subject, courtesy of its iconic Cy Young "Ghost" image, we cannot even begin to comprehend its potential value, and will let the sophisticated tobacco enthusiast ultimately determine its true worth!
