(LOT 1471)
1965 Topps #122 Joe Namath Rookie - Scarce "Butterfly" Variation - PSA 5 EX

BROADWAY JOE!!!... Still among the most desirable cards in NFL history, this PSA 5 EX #122 Joe Namath 1965 Topps inaugural keepsake stands as one of the hobby's highly coveted rookie cards. Most significantly, it includes the scarce "butterfly tattoo" on Joe's left hand, with this factory-issued variation seldom surfacing for the taking. With multiple professional teams seeking the Alabama QB's services, baseball and football, Namath chose to sign with the New York Jets of the AFL where he was named Rookie of the Year in 1965.

His Super Bowl III upset victory against the heavily favored Baltimore Colts is legendary as were many of his exploits off the field that earned him the iconic nickname "Broadway Joe." The card exhibits wonderful color, excellent centering and bright white borders. Only minimal soiling and slight corner wear could possibly attest to why this may not warrant a higher grade. Always a beautiful card, this obscure Namath "butterfly" rookie presents itself far superior than its current assessment!
