"POP 1"; HIGHEST GRADED CY!!!... One of the most popular "E" sets is the seldom surfacing 1909 "Set of 50" issue that is anchored by baseball immortals such as Cobb, Wagner, Mathewson and Young. Virtually all of the art-rendered images are similar to the ones utilized on the various E92 issues also released in 1909, and to this day, the ambiguity of the E101 distribution resulted in collectors dubbing them as "Anonymous". Presented here just happens to be the immortal Cy Young's E101 marvel residing in a PSA 6 EX-MT holder, and synonymous with Cy's number one standing as baseball's all-time wins leader is this card's POP 1 highest graded stature. Indeed, this SOLE PSA 6 offering is the finest of its kind on the COMBINED PSA and SGC census reports! They named an award after the great Cy Young, and this candy card of the legendary right hander also merits an award for its undisputed position at the top of the prestigious PSA census report.
Cy Young established the benchmark for all other pitchers to chase for it is unfathomable to think about any current MLB pitcher approaching even 300 wins, let alone Young's incomparable 511 victories. Going into the 1909 season with the Cleveland Naps, Young had already amassed 478 wins, with his 19 victories in 1909 and two seven-win seasons in 1910 and 1911 placing his final total at the miraculous 511 mark. That same 1909 campaign, this pinnacle offering was issued depicting the great Cy in a classic pitching delivery image set against a bold sunburst orange background. Young's gray colored uniform literally turns back the clock to an era when he was still dominating hitters even in the twilight of his exalted 22-year career. Highlights include crystal clear clarity, robust hues, relatively clean surfaces, atypical fine centering and even corner wear consistent with the grade. There is a modest angled factory cut at the upper and lower edges, and the flipside's "Set of 50" ad is completely intact.
