(LOT 1776)
Bob Shawkey Endorsed Payroll Check Dated August 15, 1922 – Signed by Bob Shawkey & Jacob Ruppert - PSA Authentic/Encapsulated

Presented here is an August 15, 1922 Yorkville Bank (New York) Bob Shawkey payroll check that has been signed by both Yankees pitcher Bob Shawkey and team owner Colonel Jacob Ruppert. Boldly scripted "Jacob Ruppert" in the lower right quadrant, Shawkey has added his critical endorsement on the verso with an eloquent "J.R. Shawkey" signature. Right-handed twirler Bob Shawkey pitched most of his 15-year MLB career with the Yankees, ably assisting them to three consecutive A.L. Pennants from 1921-1923. He won 20 or more games four different seasons, including the 1922 campaign when this payroll check was issued.

He will always be best remembered for starting and winning the inaugural game at Yankee Stadium on April 18, 1823, with his complete-game 3-hitter taming the Red Sox by a 4-1 score before a pack-house of 74,000+ fans. Iconic Hall of Famer Jacob Ruppert was the Yankees team owner from 1915 through 1938, with team ownership passed along to General Manager Ed Barrow after Ruppert's death on January 13, 1939. A well-preserved artifact from the early 1920s, it provides the signatures of two significant Yankee legends who paved the way for the most successful organization in our National Pastime's glorious history!
