(LOT 1339)
1916 M101-4 #186 Buck Weaver "Blank-Back" PSA 6 EX-MT - "POP 3"; Highest Graded PSA M101-4 Blank Back

Presented here is a stellar PSA 6 EX-MT offering of Buck Weaver's highly coveted 1916 M101-4 blank back subject, one of only three PSA encapsulated copies and the highest graded PSA "blank-back" example! Buck Weaver will forever be remembered as one of the infamous eight Chicago White Sox that helped "throw" the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. While he always insisted that he never took any money (which is assumed to be the case), baseball commissioner Judge Landis included him with the other seven players he banned from playing major league baseball forever. It was Landis' explanation that "any player who simply has knowledge of a game being thrown and will not come forward with such information will also be banned for life".

Such was the case for Weaver who refused to "snitch" on his seven teammates that accepted bribe money. Sadly enough, while Weaver petitioned for reinstatement for years to come, he was never pardoned by Landis. Ironically, being one of the "Black Sox" eight has made their collectibles skyrocket in desirability and value. For whatever reason, with the exception of Joe Jackson, Weaver's cardboard relics are sought-after more than all of the other "Black Sox", and only a handful of "Black Sox" issues could possibly be rarer than this solid mid-grade offering. The period Weaver throwing image depicts outstanding contrast and resolution, and while the classic illustration does favor the right edge, no obtrusive surface flaws are evident on either side. One of Weaver's most significant issues, this timeless heirloom turns back the clock to an era when the infamous "Black Sox Eight" changed our National Pastime forever!
