(LOT 1285)
1942 St. Louis Cardinals World Champs 8" x 10" Type 1 Original George Dorrill Photo - PSA Encapsulated

In the 1942 World Series pitting the reigning champion New York Yankees against the NL Pennant winning St. Louis Cardinals, pitching made a significant difference. Though New York rostered future hall of Famers Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey and Joe Gordon to lead a power lineup, Yankee pitchers posted an inflated 4.50 ERA to St. Louis' 2.60-mark. No slugfest, by any means, with only five home runs total, St. Louis batted a dismal .239, but New York wasn't much better at .247. So, the success came from the mound as the Cardinals beat the Yankees 4-1 to win their fourth World Series championship. Presented here is a delightful 8" x 10" George Dorrill photograph of the Redbirds 1942 squad. This PSA encapsulated has been marked on the face "St. Louis Cardinals ... 1942" at center, with "Dorrill Photo" at bottom left and "© 1942 ... The Sporting News Pub. Co." in white ink. St. Louis photographer Dorrill was a frequent contributor to The Sporting News, a hometown newspaper. The photo shows virtually no signs of wear of flaws on the surface and the borders remains in sharp condition. The back still holds the original paper caption listing the players in rows as follows. Front Row (L-R): Marion, Slaughter, Musial, Gonzalez (coach), Southworth (Mgr.), Wares (coach), Lanier, Narron, O'Dea (Arthur Peters - Batboy at front)
Center Row (L-R): Dr. Weaver (Trainer), White, Beazley, Walker, Krist, Dickson, Brown, Gumbert, Hopp, Yatkeman (Clubhouse Attendant.)
Back Row (L-R): Crespi, Triplett, Sanders, T. Moore, Pollet, M. Cooper, Kurowski, L. Moore, W. Cooper
