(LOT 1262)
1927 Herb Pennock 6-1/2" x 8-1/2" Type 1 Original Underwood & Underwood News Service Photo - PSA Encapsulated

The 1927 New York Yankees were notoriously branded as Murderers' Row based upon the power hitting lineup that included Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Earl Combs and Bob Meusel, among others. The '27 Yankees hit an astonishing 158 home runs with Ruth providing 60 dingers himself, out-homering every other team in the American League. But Murderers' Row also featured a rotation of Urban Shocker, Dutch Reuther, George Pipgras, Wilcy Moore, and Hall of Famers Waite Hoyt and Herb Pennock. Each one tallied 10 or more wins for the season as the Yankees posted a 110-44 record.

Offered here is a striking Underwood & Underwood Type 1 photograph of Herb Pennock as he delivers another 12-to-6 curveball to buckle the batter's knees. Manager Miller Huggins protected Pennock, starting him every 8-10 days to preserve his arm AFTER having thrown it out in 1926. Herb rewarded his skipper with a 19-8 record in 1927, and then pitched a three-hitter in Game 3 against the Pirates en route to his second of three World Series titles. This 6-1/2" x 8-1/2" original news service photo of The Squire displays minimal wear at the borders, though nothing detracts from the central image. The reverse features a paper caption entitled "Yankees Win American League Pennant After Taking Lead at Start and Holding It Throughout Season" and is dated "9/16/27". The back also displays various pencil notations and filing designations.
