(LOT 1254)
1924 Original 6-1/2" x 8-1/2" Baltimore Orioles Lefty Grove Pacific & Atlantic Type 1 News Service Photo - PSA Encapsulated

In 1924, Lefty Grove went 26-6 with a 3.01 ERA for the International League's Baltimore Orioles. It was his fourth straight season leading the IL in strikeouts where he posted a 96-34 record from 1921-1924. In 1925, Grove's contract was purchased for a record-setting $100,600 by Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics. In Philly, Grove came into his own as he led the American League in strikeouts from 1925 to 1931, won five of his nine ERA titles and led the AL in wins four times. He even captured the pitching Triple Crowns in 1930 and 1931, earning the AL MVP Award in '31 and leading the A's to three consecutive AL pennants (1929-31) and World Series titles in '29 and '30.

Offered is a rare original Type 1 Pacific & Atlantic Photos news service photo of the lefty great. This captivating 6-1/2" x 8-1/2" photo shows the then-Baltimore Orioles hurler at delivery as he warmed up for a start. The striking image of Robert Moses Grove shows moderate abrasions around the borders and an untorn crease at the upper left lining slightly through Grove's cap. On the back, there remains the original paper caption entitled "$100,600. Paid for Groves Does Not Beat Price Paid for Ruth" with the bottom dated "10-18-24". The P & A caption is also accompanied by "Pacific & Atlantic Photos, Inc." stamping in purple and pencil filing notation at the bottom right corner.
