(LOT 1249)
c.1920s Original Charles Conlon 6-1/2" x 8-1/2" Type 1 Photograph of Billy Southworth & John McGraw - PSA Encapsulated

In 1926, New York Giants Billy Southworth crushed three home runs against the St. Louis Cardinals. After his June 14th trade to the Redbirds, he clouted three dingers against his former team, the Giants, which combined accounting for more than half of his 11 round-rippers that season. Offered is a 1920s original Charles Conlon photograph of Southworth and former manager John McGraw with a pencil notation on the back of "Manager McGraw congratulates Southworth, his old player, on his winning homer, in second game". Perhaps a little bit of creative licensing on the part of Conlon, but given McGraw's notoriously surly nature, we find this slightly far-fetched. But, how do you argue with perhaps the most renowned sports photographers of the 20th century in Charles Conlon?

In this PSA encapsulated 6-1/2" x 8-1/2" photo, the two colleagues stand side-by-side at the top of the dugout leaning comfortably against two bats with players' lumber splayed across the bottom, ready for action. The Image reveals light surface abrasions (white dots) across their midsections and a minor scratch between them, but no flaws are present on their faces as McGraw actually looks happily into the camera and Southworth gazes off behind the camera. The white borders show some signs of handling age and each corner displays pin holes and light creasing from obvious display. The reverse of this Conlon treasure holds the "Charles M. Conlon" stamp at center and the aforementioned pencil notation, and others, as well as the 1996 Christie's Baseball Magazine sticker. There is also a blue "1926" note on the back, the year Southworth was traded to St. Louis. Minor discoloration from handling is also evident on the back.
