(LOT 1903)
High-Grade Complete Set of 1962 Topps Baseball "Green Tint" Variations (87)

HIGH-GRADE '62 GREEN TINTS SET!!! The 1962 Topps Baseball set of 598 cards included a number of variations including the rare and elusive "green tint" variations numbered #110-196. The uniqueness of the "greenies" is a rarity for the 1962 set and due to a change of printers and the incorrect setting for the magenta color separations. After the epic home run race of 1961 between New York Yankees Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle, collectors were eager to snatch up Topps annual offering to the chagrin of company purchasing. Underestimating the public, Topps was forced to reprint their second series, but the contracted printer had already begun series three. So Topps shipped the printing plates to an upstate New York printer for a second run, but transit damaged plates and an improper color setting produced the "green tint" visible in the backgrounds of this rare variation subset.

The subtle color difference made the second run a more difficult and scarcer variation that every master set builder covets today. The offered is the #2 finest complete set of the 1962 "Green Tints" variations, all of which graded Near Mint 7 or better by PSA with no qualifiers. The set includes: 17 – PSA 7s, six – PSA 7.5s, 58 – PSA 8s, four – PSA 8.5s and two PSA 9s. No card #159 was issued for this set in the "green tint" variety. With its unique wood grain background and multitude of stars, the 1962 Topps Baseball set remains one of the most sought-after and no master set is complete without the coveted "greenies". Originally, this set was to be a 598-card release, but with the addition of the "green tints" and other variations, master set builders know that the true number approaches the 700-mark. The right bidder could easily elevate their 1962 Topps set on the registry with this incredible "second highest grade" offering.
