(LOT 48)
"Unique for the Grade" 1933 Goudey #39 Mark Koenig PSA 9 MINT - "POP 1"; The SOLE Highest Graded PSA Example!

STANDS ALONE!!! No PSA-graded card is more distinguished and sought-after than a "POP 1" cardboard treasure that resides as the undisputed highest graded subject on PSA's illustrious population report. Such is the case for this Mark Koenig PSA 9 Mint 1933 Goudey offering that stands alone as the pinnacle Goudey Koenig subject! Bar none and "unique for the grade", it has outdistanced all of its inferior peers, defying father-time for the past 89 years to retain its original pristine state. The highlight of Koenig's formidable 12-year MLB career were the 1927 and 1928 campaigns when as the Yankees starting shortstop, he joined forces with the likes of Ruth, Gehrig, Lazzeri, and Combs to ably assist the New York Yankees in capturing two consecutive World Series titles.

A fine fielding infielder, Koenig also played second and third base, with the switch-hitter's premier season being 1928 when he posted an outstanding .319 batting average. Along with the #1 Benny Bengough, this highest graded "POP 1" gem stands as one of the two most prominent "commons" in Manny Gordon's elite '33 Goudey compilation. The brilliant Koenig batting image portrays him revealing his left-handed batting swing, with the captivating pose immensely defined by the flawless yellow background. Spot-on centering, breathtaking hues, unimprovable resolution and a blistering sharp perimeter including near-perfect right-angled formations all substantiate the museum worthy assessment that places this timeless wonder as the irrefutable "best of all the rest!"
