(LOT 1705)
Group of 5 - 1888 Goodwin & Co. Different Postcards of Doran Framed in a 7" x 26" Wooden Frame

In the 1880s, Goodwin & Company, tobacconists from New York City, began producing tobacco cards to be inserted within packs of Gypsy Queen and Old Judge cigarettes as well as tobaccos featuring baseball players and various subjects including birds, fish and more. Thus the marriage between baseball and big tobacco began. The N172 Old Judge issuance spanned four years (1887-90) and featured hundreds of ballplayers in various poses from minor league teams to the Majors. This 19th century historic set is still popular today with many of the hundreds of variations reaching record-setting prices. Offered is a period-framed group of five vintage photographs from Goodwin & Co. reminiscent of the desirable Old Judge set unearthed from the heralded "Vermont Find" more than 20 years ago. Each of the photographs was produced using the original Old Judge glass-negatives.

While the images are dated 1888, it is unclear as to when these actual images were produced and may have been generated around the turn of the century. The featured Jack Doran played third base for three seasons in the Western Association with the Omaha Omahogs and can be seen in five different poses: with bat, fielding looking up, bending down and crouching and leaning against his lumber. Doran remains a particularly rare Old Judge card to find in any condition. Each 5-3/4" x 4-1/4" example shows expected wear for a 100 to 130-year-old photo with unobtrusive minor edge and surface abrasions. But otherwise, each image is strikingly clear, vivid and in excellent condition. Housed in a 7" x 26" brown wooden frame from the period with each attached to a grey matting, this is a nice piece of Goodwin history featuring one of the rarer subjects from the Old Judge release.
