(LOT 1668)
1933 William Brenzel Pittsburgh Pirates Contract Boldly Signed by Honus Wagner and National League President John Heydler PSA/LOA

DUTCHMAN SIGNED!!! Offered is a 1933 National League of Professional Baseball Clubs Uniform Player's Contract from the Pittsburgh Pirates for catcher William Brenzel. This ordinary trifold contract for the ordinary Brenzel called for the catcher to earn $3,500 for the 1933 season, of which he appeared in only nine games for the Bucs. Brenzel only played 76 games in the Majors with Pittsburgh and Cleveland. But, the significance of the signed contract lies within as the rookie catcher's signature (penned in blue fountain (9)) presents alongside one of the boldest and clearest autographs of legendary Pirates shortstop Honus Wagner that we have ever seen. Signed "J. Honus Wagner" in bold black fountain, we are hard pressed not to see this as a 9-10 strength autograph. Though Brenzel's career fizzled after only a few short seasons in the big league, Honus Wagner's name rings eternal. Because of his exceptional play from 1897-1917, Wagner was a charter member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in 1936. (Autographed cut signatures of the Flying Dutchman sell for thousands of dollars and single-signed baseballs reach well into the tens of thousands, depending upon the strength.) On the outer trifold of the contract, National League President John Heydler has also penned his signature. Though slightly fainter given that it was signed 88 years ago, his black fountain pen signature still presents 6-7. This is one of the finest Honus Wagner signatures that we have ever offered!
