1910-11 S74 Old Mill & Turkey Red Cigarettes Silk Collection – 112 Different Including Johnson and Young. 17 Hall of Famers!
Issued in 1910 & 1911, the American Tobacco Company's S74 Silk sets remain highly desirable and very rare in high-grade. The 1910 S74 set, often called the S74-1, measured 1-7/8" x 3" and were issued in white with paper advertisements attached to the reverse. Examples from this set still carrying the paper backing are extremely rare. In 1911, American Tobacco reinvented the silks minus the paper advertising backs and available in various colors (S74-2). The colored silks were slightly larger (1-7/8" x 3-1/2") and displayed the cigarette brand name across the bottom rather than the paper backing. Sadly, this exceptional release can be markedly reduced in value when even ONE thread is out of place. This near-set includes the likes of Home Run Baker, Chief Bender, Mordecai Brown, Fred Clarke, Eddie Collins, Miller Huggins, Walter Johnson, John McGraw, Zack Wheat and Cy Young, to name a few, with several Near-Mint to Mint examples (over 30), which are in unparalleled condition in the hobby!
