1934 Goudey Premium R309 #1 Babe Ruth SGC 2 GOOD
RUTH WITH EASEL!!! Released in 1933 and '34, the Goudey R309-1 Premiums consisted of only four black-and-white unnumbered cards of the 1933 American and National League teams and Babe Ruth, as well as the 1933 World Series Champion New York Giants issued in 1934. Despite nearing the end of his career, Goudey made the Bambino the only "player" card available through a redemption program to which fans exchanged wrappers from the 5-1/2" x 9" premiums printed on heavy card stock. Goudey also used The Babe's image, in follow-thru, for card #53 and #144 of the highly coveted 240-card 1933 Goudey set. The offered R309-1 Goudey Premium of Ruth is encased as an SGC 2, likely due to some edge and corner wear as well as slight surface abrasions on the front. The reverse still holds the easel stand which appears intact and tape residue is visible on each side with light toning apparent. Still a POP 2 with only five graded higher! An extraordinary premium image that helped complete multiple sets from the Goudey Gum Company!
