(LOT 299)
1933 Sport Kings #42 Carl Hubbell PSA 8.5 NM-MT+ – "Pop 1"

When the Goudey Gum Company issued their ultra-popular 1933 multi-sports set, dubbed "SPORT KINGS", it chose only three baseball players to represent America's Pastime, with one of those subjects being the N.Y. Giants Hall of Fame southpaw "King" Carl Hubbell. Joining forces with the legendary Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb in this fan favorite issue, it comes as little surprise that Hubbell would make the "cut" for this 48-subject issue since he is highly regarded as one of the greatest left-handed hurlers in baseball history. Presented here is one of the finest known Carl Hubbell Sport Kings examples, a breathtaking PSA 8.5 NM-MT+ offering that resides as the SOLE specimen at this lofty plateau with a mere seven copies graded higher. A Cooperstown inductee, Carl Hubbell's uncanny success stemmed from his nearly unhittable screwball that ably assisted him in amassing 253 victories over his spectacular 16-year career with the Giants.

The "Meal Ticket" is the only pitcher to ever capture two MVP awards during a peacetime period (Hal Newhouser won two MVPs during WWII) and he still owns the Major League record 24 consecutive victories over two seasons. Owner of five consecutive 20-win seasons from 1933 thru 1937, Hubbell's most incredible accomplishment will forever be his performance in the 1934 All-Star game when he fanned Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin in succession! For that reason alone, collectors scramble to seize his most prized cardboard artifacts with only a handful potentially more remarkable than this stunning 1933 Sport Kings marvel. Hubbell's classic half-body portrait pose has literally outdistanced time, affixed to a super eye pleasing blue powder background. Excellent centering only reveals an ever-so-slight favoritism toward the lower edge, and the pack-fresh surfaces have eluded any noteworthy flaws. A "must-have" for the most meticulous PSA Registry enthusiast, its "Pop 1" stature and formidable "8.5" assessment place it as one of "King Carl's" most significant cardboard treasures!
