(LOT 19)
1916 M101-5 #16 Roger Bresnahan Blank Back SGC 3 VG – "Pop 1"; Only 2 Graded Higher!

One of the scarcest M101-5 Blank Back Hall of Famers is legendary catcher Roger Bresnahan, presented here in an SGC 3 VG holder. A "Pop 1" marvel, only two SGC examples have been graded higher, with a meager seven total SGC encapsulated copies! Its scarcity is due to Bresnahan only being included in the M101-5 issue, with his checklist number replaced by #16 Al Betzel in the subsequent M101-4 series. While a formidable hitter and stellar defensive catcher, Roger Bresnahan's most notable contributions to our National Pastime were the protective devices he created for batting and catching after he was hospitalized by a 1905 bean-ball. He is largely credited for the first batter's helmet, protective catcher's shin guards and provided significant input in escalating the technology for the catcher's mask. An innovator to say the least, Bresnahan's quick exodus from the M101-5 set was obviously due to his career ending in 1915 with the Chicago Cubs, and it is his classic "CUBS" uniform that highlights this eclectic SGC 3 Bresnahan offering. Rare to say the least, the paucity level of this elusive M101-5 keepsake merits serious consideration for any advanced M101-5 gathering!
