(LOT 9)
1916 M101-5 #4 Grover Alexander Blank Back (SGC 2 Good) - "Pop 3"; Only 2 Graded Higher!

One of our National pastime's greatest all-time pitchers is Grover Cleveland Alexander and it is "Old Pete's" somewhat scarce 1916 M101-5 blank back subject that is presented here in an SGC 2 Good holder. While Walter Johnson was mowing down hitters in the American League, Alexander was matching him with the National League's Philadelphia Phillies. Alexander won 30 or more games three consecutive seasons (1915 – 1917) while winning three consecutive N.L. Pitching "Triple Crowns" in that span, ending his spectacular career with 90 shutouts (2nd only to Walter Johnson's 110) and 373 wins which ties him for the most all-time National League victories with the iconic Christy Mathewson. His eye pleasing pitching pose depicts the finest possible contrast and clarity, with the only notable flaw being a horizontal crease that runs "border to border" directly above his belt. Even corner wear, the fine central Alexander image and otherwise relatively clean surfaces somewhat offset the aforementioned crease, with this classic "Old Pete" 105-year-old marvel one of his scarcest issues!
