(LOT 1736)
Babe Ruth with Brooklyn Dodgers Al Lopez and Van Mungo at the 1934 All-Star Game at the Polo Grounds 7" x 9" PSA Type 1 Acme Encapsulated

In only the second Mid-Summer Classic, history was again made, and not for what fans expected given the slugging lineups of the AL and NL. The favored American League featured Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin. But, the "ace" in the hole for the National League turned out to be Carl Hubbell. After the first two batters in the AL lineup, Charlie Gehringer and Heinie Manush, reached base, Hubbell settled down and proceeded to strike out Ruth, Gehrig and Foxx in the first and then Simmons and Cronin to start the second inning. So, Hubbell humbled the hard-driving sluggers of the AL as the HOF New York Giants hurler struck out five of the greatest hitters in MLB history in succession.

The presented photograph features the Babe alongside the National League Brooklyn Dodgers Al Lopez (right) and pitcher Van Mungo (left) prior to the 1934 All-Star Game. It just goes to show you that ballplayers are fans too. Despite his Hall of Fame career in his own right, Al Lopez looks almost awe-struck posing with the Yankee great. The PSA encapsulated photo shows excellent borders and corners with no chipping or wrinkling and virtually no signs of surface abrasions. The reverse holds a paper caption entitled "BIG LEAGUE ALL-STARS MEET AT THE POLO GROUNDS" and is dated "7/10/34". Also present is the ACME NEWSPICTURES, Inc. stamp and little toning or wear visible. Two All-Star fans of the greatest of all-time.
