(LOT 1732)
1932 Babe Ruth & Charlie Devens PSA Type 1 Encapsulated International News Photo Measures Approx. 6-1/2" x 8-3/4" (Incl. PSA Type 1 LOA)

This 1932 PSA Type 1 Photo depicts the immortal "Sultan of Swat" posing with Harvard graduate pitching star Charlie Devens at Boston's Fenway Park, with Devens joining the Yankees for that 3-game Red Sox series. This would be the season that the Yankees would crush the Cubs in the Fall Classic via a four-game sweep, with Ruth's iconic "called shot" homer in Game #3 at Wrigley Field forever residing as one of our National Pastime's grandest moments. Regarding Charlie Devens, his '32 Yankee tenure would be short lived, with the right-handed twirler spending most of the year with their AA affiliated Newark Bears club. He would win his only '32 MLB appearance, tossing a complete game 6-hitter versus the Red Sox at Fenway Park on September 24, yielding only two runs while walking seven batters in an 8-2 Yankees victory. He bounced around between the Yankees and Newark for three seasons, retiring from professional baseball after the 1934 campaign with five MLB wins.

Fortunately for Devens, this momentous 6-1/2" x 8-3/4" offering will forever secure his MLB legacy, revealing magnificent resolution and near-perfect contrast as he is welcomed to the big club by the immortal George Herman "Babe" Ruth with a firm handshake. The verso exhibits the INTERNATIONAL NEWS PHOTOS. INC. credit stamp as well as a significant folded over caption that reads as follows: "BABE WELCOMES A NEW TEAMMATE BOSTON MASS. BABE RUTH (LEFT) GREETS HIS NEW TEAMMATE, CHARLIE DEVENS, HARVARD GRADUATE AND PITCHING STAR. WHEN THE LATTER JOINED THE YANKEES IN HIS NEW UNIFORM DURING THEIR SERIES WITH THE RED SOX IN BOSTON. IT IS REPORTED THAT DEVENS WILL RECEIVE A BONUS OF $20,000, BESIDES HIS SALARY, IF THE YANKEES WIN THE PENNANT THIS YEAR. (6-30-32)". Ironically, thanks to the unparalleled exploits of Ruth and Gehrig, Devens would ultimately receive that $20,000 bonus as the Yankees cruised to the American League Pennant as well as their fourth World Series title!
