c. 1928 Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig "Champions of Al Smith" PSA Encapsulated Type 1 Underwood & Underwood Presidential Press Photo Measuring 7-1/2" x 9"
In 1928, former governor of New York, Al Smith, enlisted a battery of champions from various sports to back him for his presidential run as the Democratic nominee to face Republican Herbert Hoover. Hoover won in a landslide, despite the Smith's backing of the likes of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Knute Rockne, Gene Tunney, John McGraw and many others. The offered is a 1928 press photo featuring Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig at center with an exuberant group of fellow champions surrounding the two Yankees "Champions of Al Smith".
Ruth stands tall with a cigar in his mouth and his derby high above his head in exhilaration as Gehrig sheepishly grins for yet another photo op. The Underwood & Underwood Type 1 remains in excellent condition with sharp edges and pinpoint corners. Minimal surface wear appear on the front with no intrusive abrasions on the image. The reverse shows little wear save for photographer notations and an Underwood & Underwood stamp affixed to the surface. The lower edge also still carries the remnants of the paper caption long since removed. Sadly, the power of the Babe could not champion Al Smith to victory.
