c.1948 "Babe Ruth's Farewell" Chunky Harris Original News Photo 7" x 9" Type 1 PSA Encapsulated
TIME AND PLACE! In 1948, as the New York Yankees celebrated the 25th anniversary of Yankees Stadium, Babe Ruth returned to the House that HE built for the final time. Famed photographer Nat Fein won a Pulitzer Prize for his enduring "The Babe Bows Out" photograph. The offered photograph from Chunky Harris was taken at that identical moment as Ruth bowed one last time before his legions of fans and a reverent Yankees squad, including Joe DiMaggio, stood at attention for the Bambino. Ruth's frailty was evident just two months before his death.
This 7" x 9" photograph displays an Associated Press stamp on the reverse with a second Minneapolis Sunday Tribune stamp and December 26, 1948 date-stamp. With a caption of "1948 Picture Review No. 3 Retires", the attached paper caption serves to highlight the huge stories of the year with Ruth's passing atop the review calendar. Still clear with insignificant periphery wrinkling and corner wear. If not for a few feet or perhaps just a lucky break, Chunky Harris' once in a lifetime image may have been his ticket to fame. Whatever the case may be and whoever took the photo, this remains one of the most iconic, poetic and frankly just special images ever taken on a baseball diamond!
