(LOT 68)
1888 N29 Allen & Ginter WM. Ewing Baseball PSA 8 NM-MT

The 1887 Allen & Ginter Champions set's extreme success prompted the company to issue a second set in 1888, with the most desirable and valuable subject being Hall of Famer William "Buck" Ewing. Presented here just happens to be that 1888 Allen & Ginter N29 Buck Ewing in a magnificent PSA NM/MT 8 holder, one of only eight examples at this hallowed tier with a paltry two specimens graded higher! Buck Ewing is considered by most historians as baseball's finest 19th century catcher, as well as the foremost all-around player. A lifetime .300+ hitter, Ewing had single seasons where he led the National League in home runs as well as triples and, amazingly, hit 15 or more triples five times in his illustrious career. Synonymous with Ewing's world-class exploits are the near-immaculate attributes of this "rare for the grade" marvel, starting with a breathtaking portrait illustration of the ultra-popular Cooperstown inductee.

Crystal clear clarity and brilliant colors "steal the show", and the pack-fresh illustration is set against a virtual blemish-free snow-white background. The red and facial toned hues portray are nearly unimprovable, literally bringing Ewing's hallowed image to life with his period style handlebar mustache and rosy cheeks turning back the clock to that bygone era. Extremely sharp perimeter edging, four pinpoint corners and a near-flawless surface complete the imposing obverse side aesthetics. The verso's blue "World Champions" checklist likewise portrays outstanding eye appeal, set against a moderately toned white background. It's an unfathomable concept that any 133-year-old card could possibly sustain practically all of its original factory-issued qualities, but this majestic offering has easily bested "father time", proudly standing tall as one of the finest Buck Ewing cardboard mementos extant!
