(LOT 409)
1934 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig PSA 7 NM

In 1933, the prestigious Goudey Company's baseball bubble gum card pioneering effort achieved remarkable success, rationalizing the necessity to command a repeat performance in 1934. With Babe Ruth omitted from the 1934 Goudey issue, its two most popular subjects just happened to be New York Yankees immortal 1st baseman Lou Gehrig, making an appearance on Card #'s 37 and 61. Presented here is the more popular and valuable Lou Gehrig "Portrait" pose #37 Goudey in an outstanding PSA Near Mint 7 holder, with only a little over 3% of the approximate 950 PSA encapsulated examples managing to achieve the hallowed near-mint assessment! "Larrupin' Lou", his legendary barnstorming nickname, would justify the Goudey Gum Company's decision to place two of his subjects in their 1934 compilation by claiming the baseball's highly exalted "Triple Crown". Indeed, the '34 campaign would see Gehrig lead the American League in virtually every vital batting statistic including average (.363), Home Runs (49), R.B.I.'s (166), OBP (.465), SLG (.706), OPS (1.172) and Total Bases (409).

The Yankee Captain had now clearly become the ""toast of the town" due to Babe Ruth's career winding down in New York, finally appreciated for his world-class batting feats. This remarkable PSA 7 keepsake, likewise stands tall, boasting an amazing array of technical attributes including the classic Gehrig portrait pose, vibrant facial hues, blinding white borders, and four right-angled corners. No obtrusive blemishes are evident on either side, with its only notable flaws being an image positioned towards the right edge as well as a microscopic-like soiling "dot" on the upper border. A collector favorite for many years via its sparkling Gehrig portrait pose, it arguably resides as the most coveted of the four different Gehrig Goudey subjects issued over a two-year period (1933-'34). In closing, the ultra-rare combination of Gehrig's superior "on the field" achievements, and Lou's unbridled courage have placed him at an unequivocal level in the treasured card hobby. Lou Gehrig left an indelible mark on the game itself, and his heroism will forever place him amongst Cooperstown's most prominent inductees. Most would agree that no card could possibly transcend Gehrig's timeless legacy more effectively than this quintessential "Iron Horse" heirloom; that via its seldom surfacing PSA 7 assessment and outstanding aesthetics merits serious attention from any sophisticated enthusiast!
