(LOT 247)
"Unique for the Grade" 1921 American Caramel E121 Ty Cobb – "Mgr" on Front (PSA NM/MT 8)

From 1918 thru 1920, there was a temporary hiatus regarding the distribution of major baseball card sets. While a number of strip cards and other rogue issues (i.e., M101-6 Felix Mendelsohn, Zeenut PCLs, T213 Type 3 Coupon Cigarettes) were manufactured, the popular tobacco, caramel/candy, and bread cards prolifically distributed between 1909 and 1917 were primarily eliminated during this 3-year period. Ending this mainstream baseball card issue three-year drought was the Lancaster, PA. American Caramel Company when it issued its historic E121 "Series of 80" candy set in 1921. Classic black & white player images were affixed to the obverse side, and similar to the post WW1 issues, many of the game's greatest stars were included with Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb the foremost subjects. Similar to pre-1916 caramel cards, E121 cards are extremely condition sensitive, with examples exceeding mid-grade status near-impossible to come by. With that in mind, presented here is one of the most breathtaking pre-war caramel cards in the hobby, a 1921 E121 Ty Cobb "Mgr" version in a miraculous PSA NM/MT 8 holder. Consider this is the SOLE and HIGHEST Graded PSA E121 Cobb regardless of which "Manager/Mgr." variation is affixed to the lower edge of the card; the only PSA 8 example for all 65 PSA encapsulated copies! Opportunities to seize a "POP 1" highest graded immortal Hall of Famer simply don't come along every day, yet now is your golden chance to capture this "best of the rest" Cobb marvel. The incomparable "Georgia Peach" led the league in hitting for a record-setting 12 seasons, exceeded the .400 plateau 3 times, amassed 4,189 hits and finished his career with the highest lifetime batting average (.366), a mark that will arguably never be approached in our lifetime. This remarkable E121 issue depicts the majestic Detroit Tiger in a seldom seen throwing pose, with the classic black & white image exhibiting the finest possible contrast and focus imaginable. Beneath his hallowed illustration reads "TY COBB, Mgr.-Detroit Americans", and the illustration's fine centering only reflects a modest favoritism towards the upper edge between four snow white borders. Pinpoint corners, super clean surfaces and the verso's bold black typography are the final exclamation points for this sensational candy card treat that similar to Cobb's unparalleled skill sets, stands tall as the finest of its kind!
